This story was narrated by Sheikh Uthaymin in his explanation:
There is a hadith that states, "Every servant will be under the shade of his charity on the Day of Judgment."
The Sheikh said: Someone whom I trust narrated to me the following story. There was a man who forbade his wife from giving charity to the poor who knocked on their door.
One day, a destitute person knocked on their door while naked, unable to protect himself from the cold.
His wife was moved by the sight of the destitute person, just as Abu Hurairah was moved by such situations.
So, the wife gave him some clothes and three dates.
At that time, her husband was resting in the mosque and sleeping. In his dream, he saw the Day of Judgment had arrived, with people amidst huge waves and scorching sun rays burning them...
Suddenly, a garment covered him from above, with three holes in it. Then, he saw three dates coming to cover those holes.
Surprised by his dream, the man woke up from his sleep and narrated his dream to his wife. His wife understood the meaning of his dream, which was related to the clothes and three dates she had given in charity.
So, the wife said, "This is what happened (referring to the story of her charity to the destitute person)."
The husband said, "From today onwards, do not reject giving charity to the poor."
This incident reminded the man of Allah's reminder and affirmed the truth of the hadith, "Every servant will be under the shade of his charity on the Day of Judgment."
